The Gumbo Pot is an independent newsletter of reportage on education, health, culture, infrastructure, energy, and food for those who want to see more nuanced, thoughtful coverage on how these themes intersect with the culture of our time.

Each month features four projects, one per week, that all fall under the umbrella of one of the above themes.

My name is Karen and I’ve been an independent writer and reporter since 2020. After nearly five years I still wouldn’t consider myself a specialized journalist because I remain passionate about a wide web of topics, and want to write about them.

Simultaneously, as the legacy media industry takes a downward shift, an unfortunate consequence is that editors simply can’t take on projects that I would love to report on. It also means that for some themes, there aren’t enough outlets really digging into them as much as there could, or should, be.

This is where The Gumbo Pot comes in, and all of those curious stories that I’m itching to cover that may not have found a more traditional home can here.
